I'm driving!
I've been around Mamelodi and to the supermarket in Silverton. With passengers to navigate because the whole left-hand shifting, left-lane driving requires concentration. The "taxi" drivers are crazy...any vehicle can be a taxi and any taxi can stop at anytime. Harrowing - at 30 mph.

So the last time I was in SA in Sep 06 I was attempting to make a right hand turn (which is the equivalent hazard of a left turn in the US) on a busy intersection not far from Mamelodi. It was one of those intersections where two parallel lanes turned right. Somehow I didn't quite stay in my lane (so said Vincent) and sideswiped a car. Fortunately, I didn't do much damage, and nothing was hurt other than my pride. The so called cabs (small vans with say 14 people crammed in) really (REALLY) are dangerous--definitely stay clear and always be prepared for them to stop--right where they are. Makes the LA freeways look tame. But now you can say you experienced it.
I work for a living. I have a couple of degrees - BA in Political Science from the U. of Mississippi. MA in Environment, Politics, and Globalization from King's College London. I play bass. No husband. No kids. No debt. No house. Seems like a good time to travel.
