Class #1

Thirty-six students showed up this morning at 9 a.m. for the class. Thirty-six! So, we're splitting this into two classes and I'll teach from 8 - 10 and 10:30 - 12:30. The internet is something everyone in the class has heard of but no one has actually used. Hard to imagine, right?

This afternoon, I'm making up a syllabus to help me get organized. I'll have to create an exam so the students can earn a certificate for completing the course. Today, we just talked and I used a whiteboard to demonstrate a few things. Tomorrow, we'll get at least one computer online and hopefully we'll get a router so we can network a few more.

This is a good site with lots of basic info in fairly simple language - I thought it might help you as a reference. http://www.internet101.org/

I'm enjoying your trip vicariously, and have to agree with your friend that your writing style and perspective both beg to be published!

More resources you could use:

A lesson plan online (your students can go back to it for reference)
http://www.basicsbee.com/index.html

A scavenger hunt is a common, fun, and effective approach to teaching about using internet search engines - you can find a ton of hunts online, for example:
http://www.eclecticenglish.com/hunt/meetGoogle.html and
http://homepage.mac.com/cohora/ext/compi2.html

A source with simple animations illustrating how things like email and search engines work
http://www.learnthenet.com/english/animate/animate.htm

A tutorial on Using the Internet to find a job
http://www.oakton.edu/resource/stuserv/netjobs/index.html

Hope you enjoy your teaching! Cindy
